Bayer and the UN Global Compact

Once again we're examining the records of corporations signed on to the
United Nations' Global Compact, a partnership between the UN and big
business. With corporate corruption in the headlines, (in the United
States, anyway) we figured it was a good time to put some of the Global
Compact signatories under some scrutiny. This time we take a look at the
Germany-based Bayer AG.

When most of us hear the brand name Bayer we think of aspirin. But the
company is a major manufacturer of chemicals, pharmaceuticals,
pesticides and plastics. Bayer signed on to the UN Global compact early
on, but the company has a long history of putting profits ahead of human
rights and environmental concerns. Phillip Mimkes of Germany's Coalition
Against Bayer Dangers takes a look at how Bayer is using the Compact to
polish its dubious corporate image.
