[usas] Class and SAS

Perhaps a good way to diversify USAS in terms of class would be to focus
on sweatshops at home. Here in New York there are tens of thousands of
workers in sub-OSHA-compliant shops, many getting paid minimum wage
(which, in Manhattan, isn't worth shit) - and while thinking about
distant political problems is a luxury many of us at "richer" schools
have (more free time, often more access to progressive books),
down-to-home problems are something more folks can relate to. It's also
worth mentioning that activists in communities of color are very often
focused on fixing development inequities, preventing and punishing
police abuses, and advocating for those without health
care/housing/child care - simply because those are the problems next
door. It often gets tossed around that too many activists are rich
white guys, but that's just because the visible and international
activism is very often the realm of people who aren't busy making sure
the police don't evict the folks next door. What we need to do is make
connections with groups already there.

Cheers,

Nate
