CONFERENCE SITE
Michigan?s out, which leaves Boston and possibly (according to Melissa
Byrne) Pittsburgh. Revisiting this later (since we didn?t have quorum
the first time), we voted unanimously to hold the conference in Boston
(Maddy, Jesse, me, Saeed and Jackie were the CC members present at the
time of the vote; Bhumika and Trina, the other two people on the call at
that time, also voted yes). It will probably be hosted primarily by
Boston College (Maddy?ll get back to us on that) and, because of the
dates that work for them, will probably be the second weekend in August.
Then there?s the question of the degree to which SEIU and,
particularly, SLAP will be involved in planning/hosting this conference.
Different people are comfortable with different levels of sharing, but
the bottom line is basically that everyone wants this to be a USAS
conference, with possible double billing (but our name first kind of
thing). Good way to stress connectedness of sweatshop work and local,
on-campus labor organizing. Also a good way for us to spread our
message of prioritizing race class gender and sexuality issues. We must
make sure that discussion of the WRC doesn?t get drowned out by all the
other exciting stuff. Boston SLAP is the group which will be
coordinating this conference on the ground, hence the questions
about how much credit/attention SLAP and their local focus should get;
and
SEIU will be providing a lot of funding but has agreed to allow the
conference complete independence in terms of content.

STAFF HIRING
The SCC had previously discussed timeframe, job descriptions, money, and
number of staffers, and was now bringing all those considerations to the
CC. The SCC thought two job descriptions should be posted by the middle
of this week. Lots of folks have concerns about the feasibility of
hiring two more staff people (making a total of three by the
conference); SCC conveyed the message that Amber seems to think she?ll
probably be leaving not too long after the conference; hiring two staff
people now is a matter of making sure we?ll have two staff people, who
will be able to transition in while other staff are still there. Many
concerns raised about whether or not we have the money to do this; we
think that Rachel thinks we do. Concerns about finding an adquate
replacement for Rachel, and maintaining the personal contacts she has
with many of our funders. Discussion of whether or not it would be
better to wait until we find a qualified person (with two staffers and
an intern splitting responsibilities in the meantime, e.g.) than to set
a goal of hiring two people, period. In the end, we voted whether or
not to post two job descriptions this week: the vote was four yes (me,
Jesse, Saeed, and Maddy) and one no (Jackie). The job descriptions will
be for a fundraising coordinator, and for a program director / field
organizer (kind of melding Bhumika and Amber?s current jobs). We are
going to form a staff hiring committee ASAP, but think we should
probably wait until everyone first knows about Rachel and Bhumika
leaving before saying that we?re looking for replacements. Maddy?s
bottom-lining the request for applicants to the staff hiring committee;
the whole CC will review applications and decide on the committee over
email.
